Vincent Candela Praises Algeria’s 2014 World Cup Run: “A Lesson in Love for the Country”

Former France international Vincent Candela has offered high praise for Algeria’s performance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, particularly their spirited showing against eventual champions Germany. Speaking to Le Buteur, the 1998 World Cup winner highlighted the Fennecs’ impressive campaign under coach Vahid Halilhodžić.

“The Algerian national team showed a better side and performed well during its last participation in the World Cup,” Candela stated. “That match against Germany was difficult, but the players gave their best for the national team. They were up against a great, superior German team. The players deserve credit and should not be ashamed of this elimination.”

Though he admitted he didn’t watch every game live, Candela was struck by the quality of the Algerian team’s play from the sequences he saw.

“The Algerian national team surprised many by presenting spectacular football… They scored some great goals and pleased the whole world, not just Algerian fans.”

Candela concluded with a powerful tribute:

“The Algerian players achieved great performances thanks to the fervor with which they played and the love they have for the Algerian colors. They commanded respect and gave a lesson in love for the country to all national teams.”

Algeria’s 2014 World Cup journey ended in the Round of 16, where they pushed Germany to extra time in a 2-1 defeat — a match that left a lasting impression on football fans and pundits alike.
