Viking add PSV defender Essien Bassey to Eliteserien squad
Dutch-Ghanaian right-back Essien Bassey has joined Viking FK from PSV U21, completing a move to the Norwegian Eliteserien club.
Bassey, 19, made the switch on 2 September 2026 after progressing through PSV’s youth system. He joined PSV U21 in July 2025 from PSV Under-19 and had previously represented the club’s Under-18 and Under-17 sides.
The defender has made five appearances in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie during the 2026-27 season, starting in 80% of the matches and playing 342 minutes. He also featured for eight minutes in the Johan Cruijff Schaal.
Bassey was born in Aalten in the Netherlands and holds Dutch and Ghanaian nationality. He is a right-footed defender whose preferred position is right-back.
His move to Viking represents a switch from the Dutch second tier to Norway’s top division. Viking compete in the Eliteserien, while PSV U21 play in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie.
Bassey began his youth career with AZSV before joining De Graafschap’s academy in 2018. Four years later, he moved to PSV Under-17, beginning a progression through the Eindhoven club’s youth ranks before stepping up to its Under-21 team.
He leaves PSV U21 having also been part of the wider PSV setup during a season in which he appeared in both second-tier and domestic-super-cup competition. His senior record for the campaign includes no goals or assists.
Bassey is now a Viking player, having completed his move from PSV U21 on 2 September 2026.
