Victor Osimhen the key to Real Madrid revival as Mourinho eyes Barcelona dethroning
The battle for supremacy in Spain is already taking shape ahead of the new season, and Victor Osimhen has emerged as the figure José Mourinho believes can tilt the balance back toward Real Madrid.
After a disappointing campaign that saw Madrid finish well adrift of FC Barcelona, pressure has intensified on president Florentino Pérez to oversee a swift rebuild.
A 2-0 defeat at Camp Nou effectively sealed Barcelona’s title triumph and underlined the growing gap between the rivals.
Madrid’s season had already unravelled long before that loss. Xabi Alonso was dismissed midway through the campaign, and interim boss Álvaro Arbeloa failed to arrest the slide.
Early exits in both Europe and the domestic cup compounded the crisis, prompting the club to consider a familiar solution in Mourinho.
Now at SL Benfica, the Portuguese coach is reportedly open to a return. Crucially, he has already identified Osimhen as the striker capable of reshaping Madrid’s attack.
Mourinho’s admiration for the Nigerian is longstanding. He previously likened Osimhen to Didier Drogba, a forward who thrived under his guidance. That profile is precisely what Madrid have lacked since the departure of Karim Benzema.
Without a natural centre-forward, Madrid have deployed Kylian Mbappé centrally despite his preference for the left, while Vinícius Júnior has also been used out of position. Mourinho sees Osimhen as the solution to that imbalance, offering pace, physicality and a consistent goal threat.
The striker’s performances for Galatasaray reinforce that belief. His 22 goals and eight assists last season powered the Turkish giants to another league title and a strong European run, elevating his status among Europe’s elite forwards.
However, Madrid are not alone in their pursuit. Barcelona are also monitoring Osimhen as a potential successor to Robert Lewandowski, with Hansi Flick keen to add a dynamic focal point to his attack.
That overlap sets the stage for a defining transfer battle. For Madrid, Osimhen represents the missing piece in a tactical reset under Mourinho. For Barcelona, he is a means to consolidate dominance.
Much may depend on the striker’s decision. While he remains settled in Istanbul, the pull of Madrid and Mourinho’s vision could prove decisive in shaping the next chapter of Spain’s fiercest rivalry.
