As the AFCON2023 final approaches, set to showcase an intense clash between Nigeria and host country Ivory Coast, star striker Victor Osimhen is not just gearing up for the game but has also expressed his genuine admiration and affection for the land of Elephants.
Following Nigeria’s quarter-final triumph over Angola (1-0), the Naples striker took the opportunity to lavish praise on the host nation of the 34th edition.
In an interview with Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba on NCI, Osimhen declared, “AFCON 2023 is the most beautiful event I have participated in since the start of my career.
The atmosphere is electric, with tight security and palpable excitement in the streets. In addition, the local cuisine is really delicious, and the hotel facilities are up to par.”
Despite having only one goal to his name, scored in the initial match against Equatorial Guinea, and one assist, Osimhen’s impact during this AFCON extends far beyond mere statistics.
The Super Eagle played a pivotal role in securing penalties against Ivory Coast in the second match (1-0) and against South Africa in the semi-final (1-1, 4-2 tab).
Osimhen’s influence extends beyond scoring, as he demonstrated his prowess by creating opportunities, notably pressuring the opposition and contributing to an own goal against Guinea Bissau (1-0).
His instrumental pass for Ademola Lookman’s opening goal against Cameroon in the quarterfinals (2-0) showcased Osimhen’s ability to attract defenders and create space.
The Nigerian striker, having already secured the 2023 Italian championship with Napoli, remains a key figure for the Super Eagles.
