Veteran Benin goalkeeper will officially call it a time from playing professional football this weekend.
Djidonou, who plies his trade for French fifth-tier outfit SO Romorantin is retiring after more than 30-year football career.
He will play his final game in the France National 3 on Saturday, May 17, 2025. Coincidentally, the experienced goalkeeper is calling it a quit from football on his birthday.
Fittingly, the farewell game will also mark his 25th appearance for the French club this season.
In an emotional announcement posted on social media on May 14, the Beninese international said:
“It’s time for me to turn the page and announce the end of my career. This decision was not easy… With a heavy heart, I have chosen to bring an end to this journey that has shaped the man I have become.” He wrote on social media.
Trained in France, Djidonou built his career on discipline and consistency, earning respect both at club level and internationally.
The experienced goalkeeper capped 20 times for the Benin national team after marking his debut back 2007.
He represented Benin at two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. He was part of the squad for both 2008 and 2010 AFCON tournaments.
Aside the senior team, Djidonou represented Benin at the both U-20 AFCON and U-20 FIFA World Cup.
Because of his leadership, loyalty, and professionalism, Djidonou has become a symbol of excellence in Beninese football.
For one of West Africa’s quiet stalwarts between the posts, his retirement is the end of an incredible adventure and the start of a new one.
