Van Dijk hails English-Nigerian teen Rio Ngumoha after eye-catching FA Cup display
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has praised 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha following a standout performance that helped the Reds reach the FA Cup quarterfinals.
Ngumoha, who joined Liverpool from Chelsea’s academy last summer, was awarded Player of the Match after impressing with his intelligence and composure in a 3-0 second-half surge against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Friday.
The match saw Liverpool bounce back from a recent 2-1 Premier League defeat to Wolves, which left them sixth in the table.
After a relatively subdued first half, Liverpool’s attacking quality came alive after the break, with Ngumoha playing a key role in linking play and showing maturity beyond his years. His poise and pace in one-on-one situations did not go unnoticed, earning the admiration of his captain.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Van Dijk highlighted the teenager’s work ethic and character.
“Obviously we all see day in, day out how special he is in terms of one-v-ones and the pace he drives at players. He’s working hard, he’s a good boy and we are looking after him,” Van Dijk said. The Dutch defender added that constant guidance and learning were crucial for the young forward’s development.
“We speak to him constantly and he needs to keep learning, keep soaking it all up and take it into his progress. Friday was a good day for him. Nothing more, nothing less. He has to keep going.”
Ngumoha’s performance marks a significant early milestone in his Liverpool career, suggesting he could become a regular feature in the first-team setup if he maintains his development trajectory.
