Van Dijk backs French-Cameroonian Hugo Ekitike to stay calm and keep thriving at Liverpool
Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk has backed Hugo Ekitike following the striker’s impressive performances, urging him to remain calm and continue working hard.
The 23-year-old French forward, who has Cameroonian heritage, has been in exceptional form, scoring a brace against Brighton at the weekend.
The goals helped Liverpool record back-to-back clean sheets after their 1-0 win over Inter Milan in midweek.
Ekitike also scored twice in the Premier League clash with Leeds last weekend, marking consecutive league braces and reinforcing his growing influence at Anfield.
Van Dijk praised the forward’s clinical finishing and overall impact.
“I think he’s doing well obviously,” the Dutchman said. “Very clinical, I think, great finish. The corner obviously as well.
“I was also behind him but he did it himself! Obviously he’s important with his goals and his hard work that he put in.
“He wants more from himself and we all want a lot from him and the rest of the team.
“It’s not been an easy season but for him to come in and produce these numbers, that’s something we need, we want and he wants.
“He just has to stay calm and keep working and help himself but also the rest of the team and Alex (Isak) as well to be in their best shape. I’m pretty sure he will be fine.”
Ekitike attempted seven shots on goal against Brighton, the most by any Liverpool player in a single game this season, reflecting his growing confidence and attacking threat.
Liverpool now look ahead to a challenging fixture against Tottenham, hoping Ekitike can maintain his form and help the Reds push for a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Manager Arne Slot’s summer signing, valued at £79 million, is already proving to be a bargain as he continues to deliver goals and create opportunities for his teammates.
