Vahid Halilhodzic reflects on coaching journey

Former Algeria coach Vahid Halilhodzic has revisited some of the defining moments of his managerial career, describing the qualification of the Desert Foxes for the 2014 FIFA World Cup as one of his greatest achievements while admitting that his departure from Morocco remains a painful chapter.

Speaking in a lengthy interview with Flashscore, the Bosnian manager looked back on his experiences leading several national teams to the World Cup, highlighting the unique challenges he faced during his time with Algeria.

Halilhodzic explained that while he successfully guided Ivory Coast, Japan and Morocco to the global tournament without major obstacles, the task in Algeria required far more extensive work.

“I qualified four teams for the World Cup. With Ivory Coast, Japan and Morocco, the qualifications went without major difficulties.

With Algeria, the situation was different. I had to carry out a deep rebuild with a new generation of players in a particularly tough group,” he explained.

The former Algeria manager said the qualification campaign remains one of the accomplishments he values most from his coaching career.

“Despite everything, we managed to qualify,” he proudly recalled.

Halilhodzic also spoke warmly about Algeria’s historic performance at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where the North Africans reached the knockout stage and pushed eventual champions Germany to their limits.

“I am very proud of it. It was an exceptional adventure, both sporting and human. I had a group that was still relatively unknown on the international stage, but thanks to hard work and courage, we achieved a historic result,” he stated.

The encounter with Germany remains his standout memory from that tournament.

“Throughout the tournament, they only really struggled against us. Many even felt we deserved to win that match. After the game, the entire German staff came to congratulate me,” he said.

Halilhodzic added that the achievements of that squad continue to resonate with Algerian supporters more than a decade later.

“Algerians have very fond memories of that World Cup and what we accomplished together. This adventure earned me immense respect in the country,” he emphasized.

However, the interview took a different tone when discussion turned to Morocco and the Atlas Lions’ run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup.

The veteran coach admitted he has been unable to follow the team since his departure and spoke openly about the disappointment he still feels.

“Since leaving Morocco, I haven’t watched a single second of their matches. Not a single second, because what I experienced there was a real nightmare,” he declared.

Reflecting on the circumstances surrounding his exit, Halilhodzic said the experience continues to affect him.

“I had prepared everything with meticulous care. Being dropped without a valid reason is something you don’t forget. That wound still lingers today,” Halilhodzic concluded.
