Residents of Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, are expressing strong confidence that Nigeria’s Super Eagles will secure a victory against Zimbabwe in their 2026 World Cup qualifying fixture.
The Group C encounter is set to take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, where the Super Eagles are still in search of their first victory, having recorded draws against Lesotho and South Africa in previous matches at the venue.
Nigeria heads into the clash on the back of a morale-boosting 2-0 win over Rwanda in Kigali, with Victor Osimhen’s brace propelling them to their first victory in five qualifying matches.
The win saw Nigeria climb from fifth to fourth place in the group standings, now sitting on six points.
Zimbabwe, meanwhile, is yet to register a win in the qualifiers.
With three draws and two defeats, the Warriors find themselves at the bottom of Group C, desperate to turn their fortunes around.
Among Uyo residents, optimism runs high. Tony Edet, a local supporter, believes Nigeria’s recent success against Rwanda has lifted the team’s confidence.
“The win in Kigali has given the Super Eagles the boost they needed. I have no doubt they will defeat Zimbabwe,” he said.
Another resident, known as Uncle White, shares this belief, citing the players’ determination to qualify for the World Cup.
“These players know what is at stake. They want to be at the World Cup, and I believe they will do everything to win,” he stated.
Christian Asuquo, a fish trader, echoed similar sentiments, pointing to the strength of the squad.
“With players like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman in the team, we have the firepower to win,” he remarked.
Ferdinand Chizaram, a hairdresser, is eagerly anticipating the match, particularly looking forward to another standout performance from Osimhen.
“Osimhen was fantastic against Rwanda, and I expect him to shine again,” he said.
For tricycle driver Emmanuel Ubong, while he acknowledges the growing competitiveness of African teams, he remains confident in the Super Eagles’ ability.
“Football in Africa is getting tougher, but we have the talent and experience to overcome Zimbabwe,” he asserted.
With anticipation building in Uyo, the Super Eagles will aim to deliver a performance that not only meets expectations but strengthens their bid for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
