US-Nigerian striker Folarin Balogun determined to prove himself to Pochettino ahead of World Cup

Monaco striker Folarin Balogun says he is determined to impress newly appointed United States men’s national team coach Mauricio Pochettino as preparations intensify ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The forward, who endured a difficult season disrupted by injuries, believes working under the Argentine coach provides the perfect platform to prove his worth at international level.

Balogun, who was born in the United States but also has Nigerian heritage, stressed his desire to cement a place in the squad, with the World Cup now less than a year away.

Having switched allegiance from England to the U.S. in 2023, the 23-year-old has made clear that this camp represents an important opportunity to showcase his fitness and quality in front of the new technical team.

“I think with Mauricio coming in, the objective was clear that he wanted to bring the group forward,” Balogun told reporters.

“So as players, it’s no surprise for us to be competing for places and positions. I think it’s something we’ve done all our careers, and everyone wants to make an impression, and I think that’s just natural.”

The Monaco forward has endured a mixed spell at international level. He scored his first U.S. goal in a 2-0 win over Canada in 2023 but has not found the net since a 2-1 defeat to Panama in this year’s Copa America.

With Pochettino expected to bring a fresh tactical identity to the squad, Balogun sees the current camp as pivotal in shaping his future role in the team.

“(The World Cup) is such a big competition coming in 10 months, it’s important to leave your mark,” he said, underlining both the urgency and determination fueling his ambitions.
