Timothy Weah says Mason Greenwood has earned the right to be considered for an England recall after a blistering start to the season with Olympique Marseille.
Weah, who is of Liberian heritage through his father George Weah, believes Greenwood’s performances in Ligue 1 and Europe justify renewed attention from Gareth Southgate despite the forward’s long absence from the national team setup.
Weah told The Sun that Greenwood’s quality has been unmistakable since they became teammates in Marseille, stressing that the 24-year-old has shown exceptional maturity and consistency throughout the campaign.
He said Greenwood’s form should place him back in contention for national selection after producing his best football since leaving Manchester United last summer.
“When I speak about Mason it’s a special feeling because it’s very rare in a lifetime that you get to share the pitch with such an amazing player and amazing character.
“We’ve grown closer since I’ve joined the team and been here. Hopefully he gets that call-up soon. I’m super proud of him.
“He’s having an amazing season and hopefully I can help him to reach those heights that he’s aiming for.”
Greenwood has delivered 11 goals and 4 assists in all competitions this season, becoming one of Marseille’s most influential attackers.
His England career currently stands at one senior cap, earned in September 2020 during a UEFA Nations League match against Iceland.
He was removed from the squad after breaching COVID-19 regulations and has not featured since.
His recent interest in switching allegiance to Jamaica adds a further layer to his international future, though England remain eligible to select him.
