'Unacceptable and egocentric' - Ex-Atletico Madrid captain Gabi slams Brazilian-Cameroonian Vinicius Junior over 'theatrics'

Former Atletico Madrid captain Gabi has launched a scathing attack on Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, describing his recent behaviour as “unacceptable and egocentric.”

The outspoken former midfielder said he “detests” such conduct, criticising the Brazilian’s emotional outburst after being substituted during Real Madrid’s 2–1 victory over Barcelona.

Vinicius, who was visibly frustrated after leaving the pitch in the 72nd minute, later issued an apology—though notably without mentioning coach Xabi Alonso in his statement.

Vinicius Jr, born in Brazil to a family of Cameroonian descent, has often divided opinion with his on-field flair and off-field controversies.

His latest incident has again reignited debates over temperament and professionalism, especially given his importance to Real Madrid’s attacking structure.

Speaking to El Larguero shortly after leaving his role as Real Zaragoza coach, Gabi did not hold back in his criticism.

“He tests everyone around him every day,” Gabi said. “For me, it was to be expected; the one who has to take action is the coach.”

The former Atletico captain added, “What I detest most in a footballer is the theatrics and grand gestures, being put to the test in public.”

Gabi stressed that disagreements should be handled privately, warning that public defiance undermines team unity.

“After the match, you have to talk to him,” he said. “You can’t just let it go and have him issue a statement and not apologize to the coach. It’s unacceptable and egocentric.”

He further argued that Vinicius’s behaviour reflects a deeper issue with self-discipline.

“No one can think they are above the team,” Gabi said. “Any player who feels superior has a problem—unless you’re Messi, who won games single-handedly.”

Vinicius has been one of Real Madrid’s brightest stars this season, but his emotional reactions continue to overshadow his performances.
