Super Eagles forward Umar Sadiq has voiced his support for newly appointed Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle, who has faced significant scrutiny since taking the role three weeks ago.
Despite criticism from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and sections of the public, Sadiq believes Chelle is the right choice to lead the national team forward.
In an interview with Sporty TV, Sadiq highlighted Chelle’s track record, particularly during his time with Mali. “You can see what he did in the last AFCON.
Everyone thought Mali were among the favourites. They played well but were knocked out in the quarter-finals, which shows that it is not always the best who wins,” Sadiq stated.
The Real Sociedad forward went on to praise Chelle’s tactical acumen, noting that Mali’s performances under his guidance left a strong impression.
“I watched many of Mali’s games, and I was impressed with their style of play. If he can bring that style into the Nigerian team, the Super Eagles could make great strides,” Sadiq added.
Chelle’s appointment has been met with mixed reactions, with some questioning his ability to replicate his previous success on the Nigerian stage.
However, Sadiq’s endorsement reflects growing optimism among players about the team’s potential under Chelle’s leadership.
The Super Eagles, one of Africa’s most storied national teams, have high expectations as they prepare for future competitions.
Chelle’s ability to unite the team and implement an effective strategy will be closely watched as he navigates the challenges of managing a side with a rich footballing history.
Sadiq’s public support may help ease some of the pressure on Chelle, as players and fans alike look forward to seeing how the new coach will shape the team’s identity and performance in the months ahead.
