Uganda and Tanzania have secured their places in the CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, set to be held in Morocco.
The qualification was confirmed on Tuesday after both teams emerged victorious in their semi-final matches at Nakivubo Hamz Stadium in Kampala, with Tanzania dominating South Sudan 4-0 and Uganda defeating Somalia 4-1.
Tanzania took an impressive 3-0 lead by halftime, thanks to goals from Hussein Mbegu, Ng’habi Zamu, and Abel Josiah Samson.
Even though South Sudan attempted a comeback in the second half, they struggled to break through Tanzania’s defense.
A goal by substitute Juma Abushiri solidified Tanzania’s victory early in the second half. Despite being awarded a penalty, South Sudan could not convert, as goalkeeper Abrahman Massoro made a crucial save.
In the other semi-final, Uganda displayed their prowess by overpowering Somalia. After a scoreless first half, Abubakali Walusimbi’s goal gave the Cubs the lead.
Despite a brief response from Somalia, Uganda extended their advantage with two late goals from James Bogere, who finished with a total of six goals in the tournament.
Looking ahead, Uganda’s coach Brian Ssenyondo expressed pride in his team’s effort and emphasized the need for strategic planning before their final match against Tanzania.
The concluding matches, including the third-place playoff between South Sudan and Somalia, will take place on December 27, 2024.
