Gibraltar could soon participate in UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) international tournaments as the UEFA Executive Committee, meeting in St. Petersburg, admitted Gibraltar as a provisional member of UEFA from October 1, 2012. This provisional admission follows a decision made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in August 2011.
The final decision on the admission of the Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) as a full member of UEFA is scheduled to be made at the XXXVII Ordinary UEFA Congress in London in May 2013.
Gibraltar’s bid for UEFA membership has enjoyed support from the British Federations, but it had faced rejection from other European federations, particularly Spain, which had even threatened to boycott UEFA competitions if Gibraltar were admitted as a member of the institution.
