U-20 AFCON: We knew it would be a tough game – Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi after goalless draw with Nigeria

Morocco U-20 head coach Mohamed Ouahbi has admitted he knew playing against Nigeria would be tough.

The North African side drew goalless in the second round of games in the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament on Sunday.

“Some people thought we’d beat Nigeria three or four-nil,” he said in the post-match presser.

“But we knew it would be difficult. They’re physically strong and very athletic. Our boys gave everything.”

The Atlas Cubs failed to convert their chances despite dominating at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo.

“We created two clear opportunities but didn’t take them,” Ouahbi added.

“Now we’re all on four points and need to recover properly. Some players need a bit of rest.”

Ahead of their final group match against Tunisia on Wednesday, the coach was respectful but focused.

“I know this team well and I respect them. They’re back in the race and will be fighting for qualification. But we want to stay on top. We’ll go for the win.”

Morocco looked more composed throughout the match in comparison to Nigeria, controlling possession and pressing high.

The Super Eagles, meanwhile, sat deep and played on the break but never truly tested Yanis Benchaouch in goal.

Despite the frustrating draw, Morocco remain top of Group B, edging Nigeria on goal difference. Tunisia, just one point behind, now stand between Morocco and a top spot finish.
