Turkey set to dismiss Vincenzo Montella after Nations League run of defeats

The Turkish Football Federation has decided to end Vincenzo Montella’s tenure as manager of the Turkey national team, according to Hurriyet.

The decision follows a difficult international break in which Turkey lost all four of their UEFA Nations League matches. Turkish supporters had called for Montella to resign after the sequence of defeats.

The federation’s board has agreed to part company with the Italian, the report said. Montella will not receive compensation, following a request made by the manager himself.

The decision comes only hours after L’Equipe reported that Arda Turan, the manager of Shakhtar Donetsk, was a strong candidate to replace Montella as head coach of Turkey.

Montella was appointed in September 2023 and guided Turkey to a number of notable results during his time in charge. His contract was renewed in June 2025, extending his agreement until UEFA Euro 2028.

However, Turkey’s latest Nations League campaign ended with four consecutive defeats in Group A, which also contains France, Italy and Belgium.

Turkey began the international break with a 1-0 loss to France in the opening round. They were then beaten 4-1 by Italy in their second match.

A 3-0 defeat by Belgium followed before Turkey suffered another loss to Italy, this time by a 3-1 scoreline, in their final match of the break.

Montella’s record as Turkey manager stands at 21 wins, five draws and 14 defeats from 40 matches.
