Tunisia Draws Egypt and Senegal in Tough AFCON 2015 Qualifying Group
Tunisia — 6 May 2014
Tunisia’s path to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco has been mapped out, following Sunday’s draw which placed the Carthage Eagles in a challenging qualifying group alongside Egypt, Senegal, and a third team yet to be determined.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Tunisia head coach Georges Leekens responded to the draw with cautious optimism, placing early emphasis on the importance of a strong start.
“The first thing that interests me is the first match,” the Belgian coach said. “We don’t yet know our opponent, but I’m sure it will be key to what comes next. The final match against Egypt may be decisive, but that’s not our focus right now.”
Leekens, who took charge of Tunisia earlier this year, highlighted the competitive nature of the group. Egypt and Senegal, both with strong continental pedigrees, are expected to test Tunisia’s resolve throughout the campaign. Despite that, the coach appeared confident in his squad’s ability to rise to the challenge.
“I know the match against Egypt will be fiercely contested — it’s always special,” he acknowledged. “But it shouldn’t define us. Senegal are also a difficult side, especially when playing away. I think our qualification chances will come down to how we perform against them, particularly in the final group game.”
Tunisia, who last won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2004, are aiming to make a strong return to the continental stage after an underwhelming performance in the previous edition. The qualifiers are expected to begin later this year, with only the top teams securing places in the tournament in Morocco.
With a demanding group ahead, Leekens and his squad will be hoping to make the most of their home fixtures while navigating difficult away trips to Dakar and Cairo. Much will depend on Tunisia’s tactical discipline and ability to seize opportunities early in the campaign.
The final team in the group will be confirmed following preliminary qualifying rounds.
