Tunisia Coach Georges Leekens Omits Top Scorer Issam Jemaâ from AFCON Squad
Tunisia head coach Georges Leekens has named his squad for the upcoming 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place in Equatorial Guinea from January 17 to February 8. Notably absent from the list is Issam Jemaâ, the nation’s all-time leading scorer.
The Belgian coach’s decision has come as a surprise to many, including Jemaâ himself. Speaking on a Tunisian radio station, the striker expressed his disappointment at being overlooked and the lack of explanation from the coaching staff.
Currently playing for Al Sailiya in Qatar, Jemaâ highlighted his strong recent form, having scored six goals in 15 appearances this season. Despite his omission, the 31-year-old veteran has pledged to remain professional and available should Leekens call upon him in the future.
The exclusion of such an experienced player signals a bold approach from Leekens as Tunisia prepare to compete among Africa’s elite at the tournament.
