Tunisia Eyes Dual Nationals to Bolster Squad for AFCON 2015
Despite finishing top of their qualifying group, Tunisia’s head coach Georges Leekens remains unsatisfied with the overall performance of his team. With the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) approaching — to be held in Equatorial Guinea from January 17 to February 8, 2015 — the Belgian tactician is actively seeking new talent, particularly dual nationals playing in Europe, to strengthen the Carthage Eagles.
According to the Tunisian outlet Kawarji, several players with Tunisian heritage currently plying their trade in European leagues are on Leekens’ radar. The names Yoann Touzghar (RC Lens striker), Yohan Benalouane, Karim Laribi (Bologna), and Anis Ben Hatira have been mentioned as potential call-ups. Notably, Wissam Ben Yedder, often speculated about in the past, is not on the list this time.
Yoann Touzghar appears especially close to joining the national team setup, having recently obtained a Tunisian passport, which clears the path for his official selection.
Leekens’ recruitment of new faces indicates his desire to inject fresh blood and experience into the squad ahead of a highly competitive tournament, where Tunisia hopes to go far.
