Former Algerian international referee Djamel Haimoudi has been named the general supervisor of refereeing in Tunisia, the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) confirmed on Saturday.
Haimoudi, 55, is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most accomplished referees.
He officiated at the 2014 World Cup, including the third-place play-off between Brazil and the Netherlands, and was twice named Africa’s best referee by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in 2012 and 2013.
A FIFA-listed referee from 2004 to 2015, he officiated in several major tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Club World Cup, and Confederations Cup.
Haimoudi previously served as president of Algeria’s Federal Arbitration Commission before his dismissal by the Algerian Football Federation in December 2023.
His new role in Tunisia will involve overseeing the restructuring of refereeing, appointing officials for national and regional competitions, and implementing reforms aimed at improving the country’s officiating standards.
His appointment is seen as a strategic move by Tunisia to enhance the credibility and professionalism of its refereeing system.
