Troost-Ekong foundation to kick off with charity match in Uyo

William Troost-Ekong, acclaimed as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is set to expand his impact off the pitch with the launch of the Troost Ekong Foundation, marked by a charity match in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State.

The 30-year-old defender, celebrated for his outstanding performances on the football field, is now making waves for his philanthropic endeavors, organizing a charity match at the renowned Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Saturday, June 2, 2024.

The primary objective of the charity match is to raise funds for various charitable causes, a mission that resonates deeply with Ekong’s commitment to giving back to the community.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming event on social media, Ekong shared, “FUNDRAISING CHARITY MATCH SUNDAY 02.06.2024. E GO LOUD 🇳🇬 📣”

Despite enduring a setback due to a ruptured biceps femoris in his right leg, Ekong is on the road to recovery and is anticipated to return to action prior to the charity match, following a successful operation in February.

The injury, sustained during the Super Eagles’ encounter against Côte d’Ivoire in the AFCON 2023, necessitated minor surgery, sidelining Ekong for the remainder of the season.

However, Ekong’s resilience and leadership shone through as he guided the Super Eagles to the final of the AFCON 2023, despite his absence in the decisive match where they narrowly succumbed 2-1 to Ivory Coast.

The launch of the William Troost-Ekong Foundation will be a momentous occasion, attended by Super Eagles stars and prominent figures within Nigerian football.

The event is strategically timed, set to precede Nigeria’s crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in Uyo.

As a native of Akwa Ibom State, Ekong is poised to receive widespread support and a massive turnout from the state government and its people, underscoring the significance of his foundation’s inaugural charity match.
