Three individuals lost their lives in a tragic incident on October 8, 2024, when their bus was ambushed while they were on their way to cover the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Nigeria and Libya.
The victims were part of a crew from the sports channel “SuperSport,” and the attack took place on the Ihiala-Orlu road in Anambra State.
The ambush led to the deaths of a cameraman, a police officer, and the bus driver.
Eight other individuals on the bus managed to survive, with two escaping the scene, while one person remains unaccounted for.
In response to the tragic event, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) issued a heartfelt statement, expressing deep sorrow and condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, conveyed that the joy of winning the match and securing three points was overshadowed by the unfortunate circumstances.
“The long-standing professional relationship between the federation and SuperSport has been dealt a heavy blow by this incident,” he said, underscoring the sense of loss felt within the sporting community.
Gusau also expressed hope that security forces would successfully locate the missing individual, wishing comfort and strength to the families of the deceased and their colleagues during this difficult time.
SuperSport, a prominent sports broadcaster in Nigeria and across Africa, is a part of the South African SuperSport network.
