Trabzonspor move for Mohamed Salah moves closer with medical in Istanbul
Mohamed Salah has travelled to Istanbul to undergo a medical as he closes in on a move to Trabzonspor after leaving Liverpool as a free agent.
The Egypt international has agreed in principle to join the Turkish club on a two-year contract. His arrival will be completed once the medical process is concluded and the final formalities are settled.
Trabzonspor have already signalled their confidence in the deal by publishing photographs of Salah wearing the club’s shirt on their social media channels. The proposed agreement would reportedly earn him about 17m euros per year, according to journalist Nicolo Schira.
That salary would make Salah the highest-paid player in the history of the Super Lig. The contract is also understood to include arrangements relating to image rights and a share of shirt sales.
The move comes after negotiations with Besiktas failed to produce an agreement. Besiktas had been considered the leading contender for Salah’s signature only a few days earlier, in a development first reported exclusively by Africafoot.
Trabzonspor then moved quickly to take advantage of the situation and secure the services of one of the most recognisable players in world football. The club finished third last season and hopes Salah’s experience and quality can help it challenge for the title and perform strongly in European competition.
Salah’s proposed arrival represents a significant statement for the Bordo-Mavi, both commercially and on the pitch. The market value of the Egyptian star is estimated at 22m euros.
He leaves Liverpool after nine exceptional seasons with the English club. During his time there, Salah was paid an annual salary of 20,817,548 euros, equivalent to 13,531,406,200 FCFA.
The agreement with Trabzonspor therefore marks a major change in the 33-year-old’s career, moving from Liverpool to the Super Lig after his contract with the Reds ended. Although the transfer is not yet officially complete, the medical in Istanbul and the images released by Trabzonspor indicate that the deal is at an advanced stage.
For Trabzonspor, the signing would combine sporting ambition with considerable media impact. The club’s third-place finish last season has created a platform for a renewed challenge, and its leadership is now counting on Salah to provide the experience and talent required to compete for silverware and make an impression in Europe.
The final completion of the transfer is expected to follow the medical examination and the formal signing of the two-year contract.
