Tottenham manager Postecoglou dismisses notion of ignoring African and Asian talent amid international absences

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has vehemently dismissed suggestions that the club might reconsider signing African and Asian players in the future due to the ongoing midseason tournaments, expressing confidence in managing the absence of key internationals.

As Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr prepare to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, and Heung-min Son gets set for the Asian Cup, Postecoglou addressed concerns about potential reluctance in recruiting players participating in these tournaments.

“I’d hate for that to be the case because you’d miss out on some fantastic talent,” remarked Postecoglou, emphasizing the importance of international football and the richness it brings to the squad.

He acknowledged the significance of the competitions, asserting, “I love international football, I think it’s important. I don’t like the way the calendar has been crammed, but the tournaments they are going to now are significant tournaments.”

Postecoglou highlighted the personal and professional growth players experience while representing their nations, stressing the deep-rooted connection they have with their respective countries.

“This is where they were brought up. This is where a lot of who they are today comes from, and when they go and represent their country and put their shirt on, it’s not just another game of football for them.”

While acknowledging the impact of these international competitions on squad dynamics, the Tottenham boss remained steadfast in his support for players representing their nations.

“I would never rule out somebody because they’re going to represent their country. I think representing your country helps a player develop both professionally and personally,” he affirmed.

Postecoglou’s stance reflects a commitment to fostering a diverse and globally representative squad at Tottenham, recognizing the value of players contributing on both the domestic and international fronts.

As the club navigates through the challenges posed by these midseason tournaments, the manager’s unwavering support for international commitments sets a precedent for inclusivity and understanding within the football community.
