Tottenham consider move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to make a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in the final weeks of the summer transfer window.

According to Football Insider, the London club are considering a deal for the 33-year-old Argentina international after a series of unexpected developments in the transfer market.

A new experienced goalkeeper has become a priority for Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi after the club agreed to sell Guglielmo Vicario to Juventus.

Juventus had initially targeted Martinez but quickly switched their attention to Vicario after negotiations with Aston Villa broke down. Tottenham now appear ready to take advantage of that change in direction by attempting to bring the former world champion to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Aston Villa are understood to be very open to allowing their long-serving first-choice goalkeeper to leave during the current transfer window.

The club have recently reached an agreement to sign Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, ensuring Unai Emery’s squad remains well supplied in that position. Emery is expected to hand Suzuki the starting role as soon as the proposed signing arrives, despite Martinez having made 257 appearances for Aston Villa and helping them win the UEFA Europa Conference League during his six years at Villa Park.

Martinez, who previously played for Arsenal, appointed prominent agent Jorge Mendes last year in an effort to find a way out of Aston Villa. Should Tottenham and Villa reach a formal agreement, the Argentine would finally have the opportunity to fulfil his long-standing desire to leave the club.

Tottenham’s need for a goalkeeper has become more pressing following Vicario’s unexpected move to Turin. De Zerbi currently has Antonin Kinsky, Martin Dubravka and Brandon Austin as his main options in the position, with his team preparing for a demanding domestic campaign.

The club have appeared to struggle to find a goalkeeper capable of establishing himself as an undisputed first choice since the departure of Tottenham legend Hugo Lloris in 2024.

Martinez would bring extensive Premier League experience, a strong personality and a record of performing at the highest level. Those qualities could prove valuable to Tottenham if the move to north London goes ahead.

However, Tottenham will need to act quickly and offer a highly attractive financial package if they are to secure the Argentina goalkeeper before the transfer window closes on 1 September.
