Toto Nsiala leads Bury’s promotion charge with title-winning campaign

Veteran defender Toto Nsiala has played a pivotal role in Bury FC’s resurgence, helping the club secure the Northern Premier League West division title and extend their remarkable climb through the English football pyramid.

The 34-year-old, who joined the Shakers in January following a short hiatus from the game, has now committed his future to the club after being retained for the 2026/27 campaign.

Nsiala’s mid-season arrival proved a stabilising influence at the heart of Bury’s defence, providing leadership and experience during a decisive phase of the season.

His contributions culminated in a commanding 3-0 victory over Atherton Collieries on the final day, sealing the title in emphatic fashion and confirming promotion to the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

The triumph marks the third promotion of Nsiala’s career and underscores his enduring value, even in the latter stages of his playing days.

For Bury, it represents another significant milestone in a rebuilding process that has gathered pace since their expulsion from the English Football League in 2019.

Back-to-back promotions now place the Greater Manchester club within touching distance of the professional tiers once more, a prospect that seemed distant just a few years ago.

Nsiala’s journey to this point has been equally compelling. After departing Shrewsbury Town last October for family reasons, he stepped away from the game before returning to action with renewed focus.

His experience across the Football League has been invaluable, particularly his time at Ipswich Town, where he made 78 appearances after joining in a £2 million move in 2018.

Subsequent spells with Fleetwood Town and Burton Albion further shaped his career, but it is at Gigg Lane where he has rediscovered both rhythm and purpose.

With promotion secured and continuity assured through his retention, Nsiala remains central to Bury’s ambitions.
