Togo new coach Patrice Neveu outlines criteria for player selection

Newly appointed Togo national football team head coach Patrice Neveu has laid down a firm marker, declaring that merit, collective discipline and respect for the national jersey will be non-negotiable under his leadership.

The 71-year-old French tactician officially signed his contract in Lomé on Monday, 2 March, outlining a clear and demanding vision for the Hawks.

Known for his extensive experience across African football, Neveu arrives with a deep understanding of the continent’s challenges, and its immense potential.

Speaking after putting pen to paper, Neveu emphasized that his approach would be rooted in structure, discipline and fairness.

“I know African football well, its demands and its challenges. I also know that Togolese football has real potential,” he stated confidently.

“My working method is simple. It will be, quite frankly, a lot of rigour, clear organisation and respect for the national jersey for the players who wear it.”

For Neveu, representing Togo is not just about talent, it is about responsibility and collective identity.

The veteran coach made it clear that individual brilliance must serve the collective good. His goal is to build a cohesive unit where structure allows players to flourish while maintaining balance.

“My team will have to demonstrate collective discipline so that everyone can express themselves and all Togolese people can enjoy the game,” he explained.

He believes that sustained success will come through consistency and unity rather than short-term flashes of inspiration.

“Results will come through consistency, cohesion, coherence and commitment from everyone.”

Perhaps the strongest message from Neveu’s unveiling was his stance on selection. The Hawks, he said, will be open to all players, whether based abroad or in the domestic league, but only on merit.

“The doors of the national team will be open to all players who perform well. I mean all players who perform well,” he stressed.

“Only their performance at club level will be taken into account, as well as their performance in the national team. Only merit and value will count.”
