Togolese Football Federation Faces Fresh Uncertainty Over League Restart

Uncertainty continues to cloud the Togolese football landscape, as the Togolese Football Federation (FTF) grapples with internal disagreements and governmental pressure regarding the restart of its top-tier competitions. Just days after being reprimanded by the government, the FTF has once again walked back its decision—this time on the scheduled start date of the Division 1 (D1) and Division 2 (D2) championships.

Initially, the FTF had set May 3 as the official resumption date for the D1 league, a decision announced on Tuesday night. However, less than 24 hours later, the federation issued a contradictory press release, stating that the proposed date was not yet definitive and could be subject to change.

According to the statement, the final decision will likely hinge on the outcome of a crucial meeting scheduled for Friday with the presidents of the participating clubs. “The FTF does not, however, exclude shortening the deadline in case the club presidents consider themselves ready to start before this date,” the federation clarified.

This latest reversal only adds to a string of inconsistencies and missteps that have plagued Togolese football in recent months. Initially, the FTF had controversially attempted to expand the number of clubs in the first division, a move which was promptly overturned following governmental intervention.

As the impasse drags on, players, coaches, and fans remain in limbo, awaiting a definitive date that would signal the long-anticipated return of domestic football. Whether the upcoming meeting will bring much-needed clarity—or further complications—remains to be seen.
