TOGO : Club and League Presidents Challenge Gabriel Ameyi’s Authority

Togo: Crisis at the Togolese Football Federation as Clubs Reject Gabriel Ameyi’s Continued Leadership

Despite the expiration of his mandate, Gabriel Ameyi remains at the helm of the Togolese Football Federation (FTF) — a situation made possible by a temporary extension granted by FIFA after Ameyi personally wrote to the organization in Zurich. However, his continued leadership is facing sharp resistance at home.

On November 20, a group of club and league presidents, along with affiliated FTF members, gathered at a local hotel to express their frustration and formally withdraw recognition of Ameyi and his Executive Board. In a collective statement signed by 34 members, they declared:

“We, members of the FTF, signatories of this document, no longer recognize the quality, competence or authority of the outgoing Executive Board and its President to manage the affairs of the FTF and to conduct the electoral process.”

The group’s demands to FIFA are clear and structured. They are requesting the establishment of a neutral and transparent body to oversee the FTF’s electoral process, outlining key measures to be taken:

  • The determination of a legitimate electoral body

  • The adoption of a fair and transparent electoral code

  • The election of members of the Electoral Commission

  • The election of members of the Electoral Appeals Committee

This growing internal opposition reflects deep-rooted discontent over how the FTF is being run and adds pressure on FIFA to intervene decisively. A response from Zurich is now awaited, and it could determine the future governance of Togolese football at a critical time for the sport in the country.
