Thioune backs Karim Coulibaly with cautious approach
Karim Coulibaly spent the full 90 minutes on the bench in Werder Bremen’s 1–0 defeat to Hoffenheim, as head coach Daniel Thioune opted not to use the young centre-back in a high-pressure match.
After the game, Thioune gave a detailed explanation, stressing that the decision was not based purely on performance.
“He is a very young player. The last months and the last year have done a lot to him,” Thioune said, pointing to the intense attention surrounding the 18-year-old in recent weeks.
“There has been a lot said about him and probably also to him.” To steady things, Thioune chose a back four featuring the more experienced Amos Pieper and Marco Friedl, insisting it “was not a sporting decision against him” but also admitting they had sensed “a bit of restlessness” in Coulibaly’s previous outing.
The coach believes this phase is an important step in the defender’s development. Coulibaly has been a breakout star this season and must now learn “that it becomes more demanding and more difficult,” Thioune noted, while praising his professional reaction and their “good conversation.”
With several top European clubs monitoring him, a summer move cannot be ruled out, and Thioune openly admitted: “I am curious to see what Karim’s future looks like.” Whether he returns to the starting XI for the final home game against Borussia Dortmund, potentially his last in a Werder shirt, remains open.
