Thierry Henry warns Odegaard as Eberechi Eze’s North London derby hat-trick steals the spotlight
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has sent a clear warning to captain Martin Odegaard after Eberechi Eze’s stunning performance in the North London derby.
Eze’s hat-trick powered the Gunners to a 4-1 victory over Tottenham, underlining his growing influence in the squad.
Eze, who is of Nigerian heritage, starred in a central role under Mikel Arteta, sparking discussions about whether he could challenge Odegaard for a starting spot. His display showcased vision, pace, and finishing that left rivals scrambling and fans celebrating.
Henry singled out Eze’s central midfield potential, suggesting Odegaard’s position may not be as secure as previously thought.
“By the way if I was Martin Odegaard. I said it, this guy is a 10 for me, he’s not a winger, he’s a 10.
“He needs to be in the middle of the park he showed it tonight so that’s what you want, healthy competition that’ what you want.”
The hat-trick was Eze’s first in a North London derby since 1978, marking a historic moment for Arsenal.
After the game, the 27-year-old reflected on the achievement.
“That is crazy. Special day, man. Special day for me, my family,” Eze told BBC Match of the Day.
“I don’t think I could have ever dreamed of it. This is more special than that. I can only thank God.
“We were prepared for whatever set-up they were coming with because of the diligence of our staff. Huge credit to them, and of course the players in our team – the ability, the talent. From whatever angle, we’re threatening to score goals.
“I probably should have scored four. I’m always trying to score, always trying to take my chances. It’s important to be relentless.”
Odegaard missed the game through injury, and as he returns, Arteta faces the challenge of integrating both players into a squad that currently looks unstoppable. Eze’s performance adds fresh competition for creative midfield spots.
