Ibrahima Konate has revealed his frustration at playing alongside Virgil van Dijk, but his comments were laced with humor.
The 25-year-old defender, who has enjoyed a standout season with Liverpool, joked that his partnership with the Dutch captain is so effective that it often overshadows his own performances.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the French international of Malian descent reflected on how Van Dijk’s immense reputation sometimes leaves his contributions unnoticed.
“It’s crazy how many Man of the Match [awards] I could get this season,” Konate quipped.
“It’s very good to play with Virgil because he is a very good player, but sometimes people who watch the game think it’s only Virgil who plays. No, I am playing as well!”
Konate’s solid performances at the back have played a key role in Liverpool’s impressive defensive record this season.
In their 1-0 win over Everton on Wednesday, he helped secure yet another clean sheet for the league leaders.
However, he lamented that his efforts often go unrecognized in the shadow of Van Dijk’s fame.
“I’ve had a great game as well, but no, because it’s Virgil…” he added, before humorously noting, “I’m not jealous, but watch the game, and it will tell you the truth!”
Liverpool’s defence has been rock-solid this campaign, with Konate and Van Dijk combining to record a league-high 13 clean sheets in the Premier League.
Despite the outstanding partnership, there is uncertainty regarding both players’ futures at the club. Van Dijk’s contract expires this summer, and while talks are ongoing, no deal has yet been agreed.
Konate, whose own contract runs out next year, has also been linked with a move to PSG.
