Nigeria: Augustine Eguavoen urges Super Eagles to target AFCON glory amid World Cup setback

Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, Coach Augustine Eguavoen, has stressed that he is not interested in becoming the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

With Nigeria on the brink of missing out on qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, there are rumours in the media that Eguavoen has his sights on the Super Eagles job for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

However, addressing the rumours in an interview with the media on Wednesday, the coach said he has no interest in the job.

“I feel very hurt by these baseless rumours because I really have no idea where they are coming from. I have a very good working relationship with Coach Eric Chelle, and I have absolutely no interest in taking over the squad. I am praying for him to succeed,” Augustine Eguavoen said as quoted on the NFF website.

He continued, “This was how the same speculators created schism and disaffection between myself and Gernot Rohr and José Peseiro, when these gentlemen coached the Super Eagles, at different periods. It is uncalled-for. We all need to work together to see the Super Eagles qualify for the World Cup and win the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations championship in Morocco.”

Nigeria takes on Lesotho on Friday, October 10, in their penultimate encounter in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Eric Chelle is under pressure to win the match as calls for his sacking heighten.
