Théophile Abéga, former captain of the 1984 African champions Indomitable Lions, passed away early on Thursday at the Yaoundé general hospital. Voted the best African player in 1984, Abéga played a crucial role in the success of the Indomitable Lions during the 1982 World Cup in Spain, where they finished without a defeat. He played for Canon Yaoundé and Toulouse during the 1984-1985 season. After his football career, he served as the mayor of Yaoundé IV.
Roger Milla, former Indomitable Lions striker and widely regarded as the best African player of all time, paid tribute to Abéga, describing him as more than a friend, a brother, and the best of their generation. Milla recalled memorable moments, including Abéga’s goal in the 1984 final against Nigeria in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
