Thapelo Morena targets injury-free season as Mamelodi Sundowns stalwart nears 350-game landmark

Thapelo Morena says he feels “blessed and honoured” to be approaching a significant appearance milestone for Mamelodi Sundowns as he works his way back from the injury that ruled him out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 32-year-old utility player is on the brink of his 350th club appearance, having become one of the mainstays at Sundowns since arriving from Bloemfontein Celtic in 2016.

Morena is currently in rehabilitation after suffering an injury late last season, a setback that not only curtailed his campaign with Sundowns but also denied him the chance to feature on the global stage.

Sundowns head into the new season aiming to respond to a rare trophyless domestic campaign, while also looking to defend their CAF Champions League crown. Morena is expected to be back in contention as Masandawana attempt to reassert their dominance at home and maintain their status on the continent.

Closing in on major milestone

Since joining the Tshwane club a decade ago, Morena has played 344 matches in all competitions, scoring 25 goals and supplying 37 assists.

The versatile star – capable of operating across defence and midfield – is now just six games away from reaching 350 club appearances, a landmark that underlines his longevity and importance to the reigning African champions.

Reflecting on his time with Sundowns, Morena paid tribute to the club for the platform they have provided throughout his career.

“I think, to be honest, I’m really blessed and honoured to be part of the Mamelodi Sundowns,” said Morena.

“And for them giving me what they gave me throughout all the seasons.”

Focus on fitness and trophies

Morena says his overriding ambition for the coming campaign is to stay fit so he can play a full role in Sundowns’ push for silverware after last season’s disappointment on the domestic front.

“And for this season, I’d like to say I’m always praying to God for not getting injured, to try and also give to the team and deliver more to the team than the previous season that I’ve done.

“And create more opportunities, help the team to get more trophies than we had.

“And hopefully things will go the way I’m praying and pleading to God that it should go.”

Sundowns, who finished last season without a domestic title, will again compete in the Betway Premiership while attempting to retain the CAF Champions League, with Morena’s experience and adaptability expected to be central to their plans once he returns to full fitness.
