Thabo Cele says he had to remain focused and block out distractions after his difficult departure from Kaizer Chiefs, following Mamelodi Sundowns’ 2-0 victory over Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 final.
The midfielder was speaking at Moses Mabhida Stadium after Sundowns secured the trophy, his second since he joined the Tshwane club. Cele made his official debut for Masandawana as a late substitute in the final.
The 29-year-old arrived in Pretoria only 30 days ago but has already collected two honours with the Brazilians. He said the experience of leaving Chiefs had tested him mentally, but had also strengthened his determination.
“Football is life; it has been a difficult journey, but one I had to overcome,” Cele told journalists after the MTN8 Final.
“Going through what I went through to be here, it has been the same thing: pushing myself and focusing on what is coming next.”
He added: “And being here today, I’m so grateful. For me, it’s always been the same thing: to keep on working hard, focus on myself, and forget the distractions that are outside.
“So, me being here is massive and also a motivation to go to the next level.”
Cele’s move to Sundowns followed an unsettled final period at Kaizer Chiefs. He appeared to be outside the first-team plans and was left out of the squad for the club’s pre-season training camp in Spain.
While discussions over the termination of his contract and compensation continued, Cele trained on his own at Naturena. His agreement was eventually ended by mutual consent, allowing Sundowns to complete his signing.
The club officially unveiled him on 10 September on a two-year contract.
Cele had previously played an important role in the Kaizer Chiefs side that won the 2025 Nedbank Cup. At Sundowns, however, he faces a highly competitive midfield department after making 1 official appearance for his new club.
His competition for a regular starting place includes Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas, Marcelo Allende and Sphelele Mkhulise.
Sundowns will not have long to enjoy their MTN8 success before returning to Betway Premiership action. Their next fixture is an away match against Richards Bay FC on Tuesday, 13 October 2026.
The game will begin at 19:30 at the Princess Magogo Stadium.
