Tensions rise at Marseille as relationship between Mehdi Benatia and Habib Beye reportedly collapses
Olympique Marseille are reportedly facing growing internal turmoil amid escalating tensions between Moroccan sporting director Mehdi Benatia and Senegalese head coach Habib Beye.
French media outlets L’Équipe and La Provence reported on Wednesday that the relationship between the two figures has deteriorated significantly in recent months, creating a toxic atmosphere behind the scenes at the club.
According to the reports, both men have exchanged strong criticisms on several occasions, with sources claiming that “neither of them can tolerate the other’s style.”
Disagreements Over Tactical Decisions and Club Management
Reports suggest that Benatia has become increasingly disappointed with the team’s performances and now regrets backing Beye for the coaching role.
On the other hand, the Senegalese tactician is reportedly frustrated by what he sees as repeated interference from Benatia in his day-to-day responsibilities, particularly regarding tactical decisions and team selections.
French reports also claimed that recent decisions imposed by the club’s management, including confining the squad to one location and excluding Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the match against Le Havre, further intensified tensions within the camp.
Marseille’s Difficult Season Continues
Foot Mercato described Marseille’s current situation as deeply unstable despite the club entering the season with high ambitions following a strong transfer window and qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
“Marseille has nothing to envy. In the last few months, the world at Marseille has been harsh,” the outlet wrote.
It added, “However, theoretically, all the conditions were in place for great achievements after an ambitious transfer window and a new Champions League qualification. But the inhabitants of the Velodrome stadium saw their dream turn into a nightmare.”
The report continued by highlighting the major changes behind the scenes, including the departure of Roberto De Zerbi and Pablo Longoria, while also suggesting that Benatia could leave the club again once the season concludes.
European Hopes Still Alive Amid Fan Anger
Despite the off-field chaos, Marseille managed to return to winning ways last weekend with a narrow 1-0 victory over Le Havre thanks to a penalty from Mason Greenwood.
The result kept alive the club’s hopes of securing European football next season, although qualification for the Champions League now appears out of reach.
Marseille currently sit sixth in the Ligue 1 standings and are set to host fifth-placed Rennes at the Velodrome on May 17 in a crucial final-round encounter.
The club still hopes to secure a Europa League place, but fan frustration continues to grow amid disappointing performances and ongoing internal conflicts. Reports indicate that supporter protests, which already began during the Le Havre match, are expected to continue during Sunday’s decisive fixture.
