Tanzania will host the opening match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), with the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam selected as the venue for the tournament’s curtain-raiser on 2 August 2025.

The announcement was made by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following consultations with the three East African co-hosts—Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda—who are jointly staging the biennial competition for the first time.

The tournament, which features national teams made up exclusively of players active in their domestic leagues, will run from 2 to 30 August 2025, marking the first return of CHAN to East Africa since Rwanda hosted the 2016 edition.

CAF also confirmed the venues for the tournament’s concluding fixtures. Uganda’s Mandela Stadium in Kampala has been selected to host the third-place match, while the final will be played at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya on 30 August.

The tournament’s rotation between three countries is part of CAF’s strategy to deepen regional cooperation and infrastructure development while giving fans across East Africa direct access to top-tier continental competition.

With Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda all aiming to leave a strong mark both as hosts and participants, the 2024 CHAN promises to deliver not just elite-level football but also a showcase of East Africa’s organisational capacity on the continental stage.
