Nelson Simwa: From Shield Cup Surprise to National Team Dream
West Kenya Sugar FC striker Nelson Simwa has capped off an impressive season with the ultimate reward: a national team call-up. After helping lead his club to the Shield Cup semi-finals, the prolific forward caught the attention of Harambee Stars coach Bobby Williamson, earning a spot in the squad for the upcoming friendly against Morocco on October 13.
Simwa admits the call-up came as an unexpected but welcome surprise.
“All players want to play for their national team and I’m no different. To be honest, this is a surprise for me, a good surprise. I was always working hard to get called up, but I didn’t know it would come so soon. It’s a dream come true and I’m grateful to God and everyone who helped me get to this level,” he told futaa.com.
Learning from the Best
Now in camp since October 6, Simwa has been training alongside veterans like Dennis Oliech and David Owino, gaining valuable insight and experience.
“I am learning a lot in the national team alongside the experienced players like Oliech, Owino and the others. The coach also helps me a lot tactically and I believe I will prove all that on the pitch,” he added.
The national squad is set to travel to Morocco on Saturday, where Simwa will look to make the most of this golden opportunity and possibly cement a place in future national team selections.
From Shield Cup semi-finalist to international hopeful, Nelson Simwa’s rise is a reminder of how persistence and performance can open doors — even when least expected.
