‘Take that opportunity’ – Victor Osimhen urged to consider Real Madrid move
Former Nigeria international John Utaka has urged compatriot Victor Osimhen to seize a potentially defining moment in his career, backing a transfer to Real Madrid if the opportunity materialises this summer.
Osimhen’s future has once again come under intense scrutiny following another prolific campaign with Galatasaray.
The Nigerian striker has established himself as one of Europe’s most lethal forwards, delivering 59 goals in 74 appearances since making his move permanent in 2024. His impact has translated directly into silverware, inspiring two league titles and a Turkish Cup triumph, while also shining on the continental stage.
With Europe’s elite circling, including Arsenal and Manchester United, speculation has intensified around a possible blockbuster move. Reports linking Osimhen to Madrid have gathered momentum, particularly amid suggestions that José Mourinho could return to the Santiago Bernabéu and influence recruitment.
Utaka, who previously starred for Montpellier HSC, believes such a switch would align perfectly with Osimhen’s ambitions.
“If I were Osimhen, I would go because if Mourinho has requested for him, it means he really wants him. Osimhen wants to win trophies and Real Madrid is a perfect fit,” he told Brila FM.
“Personally, I will plead with Osimhen to leave Galatasaray and go. Football is about winning trophies and creating history. If the club he’s going to gives him a better chance to win titles and grow financially, then he should take that opportunity.”
For Osimhen, the appeal is obvious. Real Madrid remain the benchmark in European football, and a move could elevate him into a new bracket alongside global stars like Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior. It would also present a historic milestone, potentially making him the first Nigerian to feature for Madrid’s senior side.
Despite his success in Turkey, one major piece is still missing from Osimhen’s collection: a European title. At Madrid, the pathway to the UEFA Champions League is not just realistic but expected.
Yet, any deal remains far from straightforward. Galatasaray are reluctant to lose their talisman and would likely demand a fee in the region of €150 million. Beyond finances, Osimhen’s deep connection with the club and its supporters adds another layer of complexity.
Still, as Utaka emphasised, football careers are defined by decisive moments. Should Madrid formalise their interest, turning it down may prove far more difficult than staying.
