Swedish-Senegalese forward Amin Sarr joins Hellas Verona from Lyon in cut-price transfer

Amin Sarr’s brief stint at Olympique Lyonnais has officially come to an end, as the Swedish striker completes a permanent move to Italian side Hellas Verona for €5 million.

The 23-year-old arrived at Lyon in January 2023 from Heerenveen with high hopes and a €12 million price tag, but struggled to live up to expectations during his time in France.

After limited impact in Ligue 1, he was loaned out to Verona, where he showed flashes of promise that prompted the Serie A outfit to make the move permanent.

Lyon confirmed the departure on Friday, marking another financial loss in a string of underwhelming transfers for the club in recent years.

For a player acquired at significant cost only 18 months ago, the deal represents a sizeable deficit and underscores Lyon’s increasingly cautious approach to the summer transfer window.

Sarr’s exit adds to the growing list of outgoings at Lyon as the club attempts to rebalance its squad following a turbulent 2023–2024 campaign.

Though the Swedish forward failed to cement his place at Groupama Stadium, his stint at Verona was more productive, featuring in several key matches that caught the attention of the Italian club’s technical staff.

At Lyon, Sarr struggled for game time, making just a handful of appearances under multiple managers. His physical profile and pace were seen as assets, but inconsistency and difficulty adapting to the demands of French football hindered his ability to make a lasting impact.

Lyon, meanwhile, is expected to reinvest the incoming funds — modest as they may be — as they reshape their attacking options ahead of the new season.

porting director David Friio and manager Pierre Sage are reportedly looking at younger, more affordable profiles who can be developed over time rather than high-risk big-money signings.

The move to Verona may prove to be a fresh start for Sarr, who will now have the opportunity to reestablish himself in Serie A.

The Italian club’s style of play and faith in the striker’s potential could provide the right conditions for the Swede to rediscover his form and confidence.

Despite the financial setback, Lyon remains active in the market and continues to prioritize both outgoings and key reinforcements as they aim to return to European contention.

Sarr’s departure, while not profitable on paper, does at least provide some clarity in a squad still undergoing transition.

The Swedish international now looks ahead to the next chapter of his career in Italy, where a full season under one club’s colours could offer the stability he lacked in France.

For Lyon, the search for efficiency and sustainability in the transfer market continues.
