Alexander Isak is training at his former club Real Sociedad after opting out of Newcastle United’s preseason tour of Asia, fuelling further speculation around his future at St. James’ Park.
The Swedish international, who is of Eritrean descent, has been at the centre of a transfer storm in recent weeks, with Premier League rivals Liverpool and Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal among clubs vying for his signature.
Newcastle confirmed last week that Isak would miss the club’s tour due to a “minor” thigh issue, but it has since emerged that the striker made a formal transfer request shortly before the announcement. While he remains under contract with the Magpies, he is not currently training on Tyneside.
Instead, according to Spanish outlet El Diario Vasco, the 25-year-old has returned to the training base of Real Sociedad in Zubieta, where he is working under the supervision of a personal fitness coach.
The move has raised eyebrows, especially as medical checks have revealed no significant injury—prompting speculation that the so-called knock may have been cited to reduce public scrutiny while negotiations unfold.
Isak enjoyed a prolific 2024/25 season, scoring 26 goals in 40 appearances for Newcastle, a return unmatched by any of his teammates.
His absence during a crucial phase of preseason preparations, however, is an unwelcome distraction for Eddie Howe, who is already dealing with transfer exits and squad reshuffling.
The situation adds pressure on Newcastle’s leadership as they attempt to retain their top scorer ahead of a season in which expectations have been raised.
With talks reportedly advancing behind the scenes, Isak’s presence in Spain rather than with his current club may prove to be a telling sign of what’s to come.
