Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has issued a rallying call to the nation, urging fans and the media to unite behind the Atlas Lions as the country prepares to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The tournament is scheduled to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, with Morocco aiming to lift the continental trophy on home soil.
Despite leading the national team on a 12-match unbeaten run, Regragui has faced mounting pressure and criticism. Speaking ahead of the tournament, the 48-year-old tactician called for unity and renewed support from all Moroccans.
“I call upon you once again to stand with us, support me and the players. I am confident that if this support is achieved, the Africa Cup of Nations will not leave Morocco, and I renew my promise that I will deliver it to you.”
Regragui expressed disappointment over what he described as unjust criticism, insisting that the team’s strong results speak for themselves. He appealed for a fresh start built on mutual trust.
“I would like us to start a new chapter based on mutual trust, as our goal is one: to win the Africa Cup of Nations.”
The coach also revealed that he had tendered his resignation after Morocco’s AFCON campaign in Côte d’Ivoire, but the president of the Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, refused to accept it, showing continued faith in his leadership.
“If I don’t succeed in winning the continental title, I will undoubtedly leave, but my goal is clear: to please the Moroccan fans by retaining the cup in the capital, Rabat, God willing.”
Morocco has been drawn in Group A alongside Zambia, Mali, and Comoros.
