SuperSport United interim coach Andre Arendse has welcomed the return of veteran defender Thulani Hlatshwayo, describing his presence as a crucial boost in the club’s battle to avoid relegation.
Hlatshwayo featured in the goalless draw against Cape Town City at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday, marking his first appearance of the year.
A long-awaited comeback
The former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana defender had been sidelined since November following an injury sustained in a match against Chippa United.
Although he regained fitness in February, he was largely overlooked under former head coach Gavin Hunt, who was recently dismissed.
Arendse, now tasked with guiding the team to safety, did not hesitate to reinstate the experienced centre-back into the starting lineup.
“The first thing I did was to understand how to overcome this challenge, and I concluded that I had to rely on my experienced players, including Tyson [Hlatshwayo],” Arendse said. “He is a club man, a football legend, a good leader, and I needed him tonight. Working with him during the week has been positive.”
Defensive stability in crucial times
Hlatshwayo’s return provided an immediate impact, particularly in defensive organization and set-piece situations.
His presence at the back offered much-needed stability, easing the pressure on goalkeeper Ricardo Goss.
SuperSport United’s defensive struggles have been a key concern throughout the season, and Arendse emphasized the importance of experience in high-pressure situations.
With just a handful of games remaining, he believes players like Hlatshwayo will be vital in steering the club away from the relegation zone.
The battle for survival
SuperSport United currently sit 15th in the Betway Premiership standings, a position that leaves them in danger of dropping to the lower division.
Arendse has called on his squad to show resilience and determination as they fight for survival.
“We have to fight until the very end. It’s about character and the will to return to winning ways,” he said. With Hlatshwayo back in the fold, SuperSport United will be hoping for a change in fortunes as they look to climb out of the relegation zone in the crucial final stretch of the season.
