The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that the Super Eagles will face Ghana in an international friendly in June as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
NFF announces key warm-up matches
The fixture against the Black Stars is one of two friendlies scheduled for the June international window, with Nigeria also set to play Russia.
Both matches will take place in Europe as the Super Eagles fine-tune their squad ahead of their crucial qualifying match against South Africa in September.
Jollof derby returns
The rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana, often referred to as the Jollof Derby, will be rekindled following their last meeting in March 2024, when the Super Eagles secured a 2-1 victory in Morocco.
The upcoming encounter will provide head coach Eric Chelle with an opportunity to assess his squad and fine-tune tactics ahead of competitive fixtures.
Ghana replaces Zambia as opponent
Initially, Nigeria had considered facing Zambia due to their playing style, which closely resembles that of South Africa.
However, Ghana was ultimately selected as the opponent.
The Super Eagles will take on South Africa on September 7, 2025, in a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier, with a place in the tournament—set to be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico—at stake.
Strategic preparations for World Cup qualification
With World Cup qualification on the line, these friendlies will serve as vital preparation for Nigeria.
The coaching staff aims to refine the squad’s approach and ensure they are in peak condition for the decisive qualifier against South Africa.
