Super Eagles set for high-stakes World Cup play-off clash against Gabon in Rabat

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face Gabon on Thursday evening at the Complexe Sportif Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan in Rabat, aiming to revive their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.

The three-time African champions enter the playoff semi-final seeking redemption after missing automatic qualification.

Beyond points, the encounter represents a chance to restore national pride and avoid consecutive World Cup absences for the first time since 1994.

The build-up to this match was turbulent, with off-field disputes threatening to disrupt preparations. A brief pay row unsettled the camp, but recent developments have allowed the squad to refocus.

Coach Eric Chelle has emphasized the importance of letting performance, not controversy, define the team.

“Nigeria has a team capable of earning a World Cup ticket,” said Nigerian federation President Ibrahim Musa Gusau. Former coach Augustine Eguavoen echoed confidence in the players’ ability while cautioning against complacency, noting the timing of the earlier strike was unfortunate.

Historically, Nigeria has dominated Gabon in senior meetings, winning five of nine encounters. The last loss came in Libreville during 1990 World Cup qualifiers. Their previous clash in 2005 ended 2–0 in Nigeria’s favour.

Chelle is expected to field an experienced defensive line, with Stanley Nwabali in goal, shielded by Benjamin Frederick, William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, and Zaidu Sanusi.

Midfielders Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Frank Onyeka will manage possession and disrupt Gabon’s rhythm.

Up front, Victor Osimhen, backed by Samuel Chukwueze and Ademola Lookman, will spearhead Nigeria’s attack. His duel with Gabon captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang promises to be decisive.

Gabon, unbeaten in seven games, will seek early dominance through quick passing, led by Aubameyang, Mario Lemina, and Guélor Kanga.

Their recent form under Thierry Mouyouma signals a team capable of challenging even Africa’s elite.

Kickoff is scheduled for 16:00 GMT. The winner advances to face the victor of Cameroon vs DR Congo in Sunday’s final, taking one step closer to the 2026 World Cup.
