Sundowns strengthens lead

Mamelodi Sundowns tightened their grip on the Betway Premiership title race after cruising to a commanding 3-0 victory over Polokwane City, opening up a five-point lead at the top.

The Brazilians continued their dominance over Polokwane, completing a double over their opponents in the space of four days following a narrow 1-0 win in Seshego earlier in the week. This latest triumph, however, was far more emphatic as they underlined their championship credentials in front of their home fans at Loftus Versfeld.

With closest challengers Orlando Pirates dropping further behind, Sundowns seized full control of the title race. Goals from Tashreeq Matthews, Iqraam Rayners, and Nuno Santos ensured maximum points in a match they dominated from start to finish.

It was largely a one-sided affair in Pretoria, with Sundowns dictating the tempo and showcasing their attacking depth under clear skies in the capital. Their fluid passing and relentless pressure left Polokwane chasing shadows for much of the contest.

Polokwane City did have a golden opportunity to get back into the game after being awarded a penalty, but captain Puleng Marema failed to convert from the spot, summing up a frustrating afternoon for the visitors.

Despite the defeat, the Limpopo-based side remain in the top eight, currently sitting sixth. However, their position is far from secure, with teams like Golden Arrows and Stellenbosch FC among those capable of overtaking them if results don’t improve.

As for Sundowns, the message is clear—they are firmly in control of the title race, and with momentum on their side, the chasing pack will have to produce something special to stop them.
