Jules Ahoka has become one of the Premier League’s more intriguing young signings after Sunderland paid 10 million euros for a player with very little senior experience.
The 20-year-old defensive midfielder has had limited opportunities since arriving in England, but that lack of game time has only increased interest in his rapid rise. His career has taken him from a youth club in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to a long-term Sunderland contract in the space of a few years.
Developed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Ahoka did not come through a European academy. He began his football education in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with Magik Stars de Normands, before progressing to the reserve side of AS Normands Stars and eventually making his senior debut.
He later joined AC Normands, a club based in the country’s capital, where he developed as a defensive midfielder. Until recently, he was largely unknown to the wider public, although he had already represented the Democratic Republic of the Congo at youth level.
Four senior appearances at Royal Antwerp
Ahoka’s first move to Europe came in September 2025, when Royal Antwerp signed him for 225,000 euros on the final day of the Belgian transfer window.
His first campaign in Europe was largely spent with the club’s B team. At senior level, he made only four appearances for Royal Antwerp, giving him a limited professional record before Sunderland made their move.
That transfer represented a significant change in both his status and his value. Sunderland paid 10 million euros to sign him this summer, approximately 44 times the amount Royal Antwerp had spent on him, and secured his services until 2031.
A rapid increase in value
The length of the contract reflects Sunderland’s commitment to a player who is only beginning to adapt to the Premier League. According to Transfermarkt estimates, Ahoka’s market value has risen from 300,000 euros to 7 million euros since the start of the season, an increase of more than 20 times.
His involvement on the pitch remains modest. He has made just one appearance for Sunderland, featuring in the EFL Cup against Hull City.
Manager Regis Le Bris has highlighted Ahoka’s strength in challenges, his ability to cover space and the confidence he has shown. The midfielder is also an international at Under-23 level with DR Congo, having been called up six times by the Leopards’ age-group side.
Sunderland’s next fixture is their sixth match of the English league season, against Brighton. It remains to be seen whether Ahoka will be given another opportunity as he continues his transition from a little-known prospect into one of the club’s most valuable young players.
