Sunderland stun Chelsea as controversial penalty seals home victory

Sunderland claimed a 1-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday, with a disputed penalty from Le Fee deciding the Premier League meeting at the Stadium of Light.

The result leaves Chelsea fifth in the table on 16 points, while Sunderland moved up to 18th with eight points.

BBC Sport’s match highlights showed the decisive moment arriving in the 36th minute. Referee Jared Gillett awarded Sunderland a penalty after judging that Levi Colwill had pulled down Brian Brobbey inside the area. The decision prompted considerable debate, with the two players involved in a physical contest as Brobbey moved towards goal.

Le Fee converted from the spot to give Sunderland the only goal of the match and secure their second Premier League victory of the season. It was also their sixth win in all competitions, providing a significant boost for manager Regis Le Bris as pressure on him eases.

The result was Sunderland’s first league win since they beat Fulham 1-0 at home in the second round of the season. The Black Cats produced an impressive performance against Chelsea and limited their visitors to few clear opportunities after taking the lead.

Brobbey was particularly influential for Sunderland before being forced off. He came close to opening the scoring earlier in the match when he met a cross from Chemsdine Talbi with a header that went narrowly wide.

The striker was substituted in the 77th minute, after which Sunderland adopted a more defensive approach. Chelsea, however, rarely posed a serious threat and could not find a way through.

Le Bris will nevertheless be concerned by injuries to two of his key players. Both Granit Xhaka and Brobbey left the pitch suffering from muscular problems.

Chelsea have now lost two of their past three Premier League matches. Sunderland’s victory, meanwhile, gives them a much-needed league success after a difficult run and lifts them to within reach of the teams above them.

The Premier League fixtures listed for 21 November 2026 also included Aston Villa against Sunderland and Chelsea against Leeds United.
